Abstract:

Production parameters, structural characteristics, and functional properties based on laboratory and field testing to produce ternary ceramic coatings for machining are presented. In the present basic and applied research on the development of ternary coatings, specific goals are to find optimum process parameters for a given target composition (bias, nitrogen pressure, temperature) for the steered arc ion plating technology; to find the property or group of properties that determines the wear resistance of a given coating for a certain application; and to find the optimum cutting operation conditions for a given combination of workpiece materials and coated-tool system.
