Abstract: This article discusses the notion of the stereotype in relation to the concept of identity. After a brief presentation of the dominant tendencies in contemporary studies of the stereotype, it proposes a new, pragmatist definition of the concept that enables it to function as an analytical tool for texts and films of both popular and high culture. Special attention is given to the problem of change in the field of stereotype studies and to the way in which the legacy of post-structuralism can be taken into account in studies of the stereotype.
