In view of the preparation of their new global strategic plan for the period 2014-2019, the Belgian NGO Vredeseilanden commissioned a number of Strategic Learning Assessments (SLA)for their work with family farmers in the South (and North). HIVA was asked to do the evaluation of the North programme of Vredeseilanden, which includes cooperation with large retailers, decentralised government, large industrial kitchens, youth groups, etc. The SLA was set-up as a guided self-assessment exercise. It included three focus group meetings, two review workshops with a large representation of the staff, a range of interviews with different stakeholders, and a review of the programme documentation. The process was concluded in June 2012 with the presentation of the report on a debriefing workshop.
