Abstract: The FE model updating method can be used to identify unknown structural parameters of civil structures and determine structural damage in particular. The method consists in minimizing the discrepancies between the numerical and experimental modal data by adjusting the unknowns of the FE model. Generally, the discrepancies in eigenfrequencies and mode shapes are minimized, but also the discrepancies in modal strains can be included. Damage functions axe used to approximate the stiffness distribution, as an efficient approach to reduce the number of unknowns.
