The strata surrounding coal bord and pillar workings were investigated by means of a Mohr-Coulomb model that incorporated interfaces. The input parameters of the model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements of in-situ stress, pillar fracturing and roof deflection. In this way cohesion values of the coal seam between 1.5 and 4.S MPa were calculated. The model that was established proved to be a useful tool in predicting and comparing roof strata and coal pillar behaviour under various conditions, such as depth of seam, different pillar sizes and various horizontal to vertical stress ratios.
