Abstract: Knowledge of the past is crucial to understand the
recent evolutions in general practice in Belgium and
Flanders as well as to guide the development and
the implementation of new options. Applying the
„oral history” technique, six general practitioners
were interviewed concerning the historical development
of general practice in the last five decades.
The great themes and items of discussion
remain very stable: the organization of the job, the
continuity of care, teaching and continuous professional
development, the combination job vs. private
life, scientific development and ethical issues. Many
changes and evolutions have often taken place as
a result of evolutions in society rather than by rational decisions by the professionals or the planners
of the system. Research is urgently needed to
understand some of these issues.
