Studies on the Interaction of Art, Thought and Power vol:6
"The present volume is the third in a series of conferences held at the Accademia di Studi italo-tedeschi of Meran. It stands in a particularly close continuity with the first symposion, which gave rise to the foundation of the series IATP. While this first volume focused on a comparison between Augustan Rome and the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, the present volume widens the perspective by taking into account various aspects of classical antiquity and its reception until modern times and by including also the Middle Ages and the beginnings of the Italian Renaissance. The program was designed jointly by H.-C. Günther, Riccardo Pozzo and Andrea Robiglio and financed by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung as a ‘Humboldtkolleg’,
with a further contribution from the Südtiroler Sparlasse, Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano. The volume also includes some
external papers, thus we thank Rolf Kühn, Detlef Liebs, Kevin Newman, Christophe Sirodeau and Johann Peter Vogel for their substantial contribution.
Beside the comparison between antiquity and the 20th century
the volume focuses in particular on the Soviet Union, less well known Jewish intellectuals and artists, and also on music. These three topics are singled out as the object of further research; the contributions on music, in particular, prepare a common research project of Hubert Eiholzer and H.-C. Günther on the ethics of musical performance. Particularly heartfelt thanks, however, go to Rivka Basman Ben-Haim who via the mediation of H.-C. Günther permitted us to include the poem which is given in facsimile with her own English translation in the
frontispiece.Further thanks go to Friederike Schmiga MA for technical help in the preparation of the ms.
