Abstract:   Transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations (TLESRs) are the predominant mechanisms underlying gastro-esophageal reflux. TLESRs are mediated by a vago-vagal reflex, which can be blocked by interaction with metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 (mGluR5), γ-aminobutyric acid type B (GABA(B)), γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)), and cannabinoid (CB) receptors. However, the distribution of these receptors in the neural pathway underlying the triggering of TLESRs has not been evaluated in humans.
