Abstract: Steady state and time-dependent fluorescence measurements were carried out for 2-naphtholate ions injected into cetyltrimethylammonium bromide microemulsions. The results indicate exciplex formation, and reveal extensive hydration changes at water-to-surfactant molar ratio of about 6.5. It was concluded that the low dielectric constant at microemulsion interfacial region is interpretable in terms of interfacial water concentration, hydration changes and hydrogen-bonding. The overall fluorescence decay constants for 2-naphthol, 2-naphtholate ions and 2-naphtholate-cetyltrimethylammonium exciplex as functions of water-to-surfactant molar ratios are reported and discussed.
