Abstract: A new lactam monomer containing a vinylidene group was synthesized, namely, 5-methyl-3-methylene-2-pyrrolidone (4). The homopolymerization and copolymerization with methyl methacrylate and with styrene were studied. The copolymerization parameters r1 and r2 were also evaluated. Hydrolysis of the pendent lactam groups yields a polyelectrolyte (or homopolymer) with pendent gamma-amino acid units.
