A kinetic study of the reaction Mg(1S) + Cl2(1SIGMA(g)+) --> MgCl(X2SIGMA+) + Cl(2P) is carried out in the temperature range from 305 to 903 K. The kinetic data are obtained in a fast-flow reactor where the magnesium atoms are generated by thermal evaporation of magnesium pellets. Atomic absorption spectroscopy at 285 nm is used as detection technique. The Arrhenius expression k3 = (3.7 +/- 0.3) x 10(-10) exp(-3.6 +/- 0.3 kJ mol-1/RT) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 is derived. This result is discussed in the light of the electron-jump or harpooning mechanism.
