Abstract: The rate constant of the reaction of alpha-pinene with atomic hydrogen was determined at 295 K using the fast-flow reactor technique directly coupled to a mass spectrometric detection technique. The value was found to be equal to (9.8 +/- 3.3) x 10(-13) cm3 molecules-1 s-1 and independent of the helium pressure between 1 and 2 torr. The major reaction product formed is pinane showing that the stabilization of the adduct radical C10H17*, followed by a subsequent hydrogen atom addition step, is the important reaction route.
