Abstract: A product yield study is presented on the reaction of alpha-pinene with hydroxyl radicals in the presence of molecular oxygen and nitric oxide. Reaction product yields R for the following compounds have been determined: R(CO2) = 2.0 +/- 0.4, R(CO) = 1.8 +/- 0.3, R(acetone) = 0.18 +/- 0.02, R(pinonaldehyde) = 0.31 +/- 0.15 and R(NO2) = 0.13. From these laboratory measurements and based on on a terpene emission of 147 Tg/year, the alpha-pinene/OH reaction results in global annual emission rates for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and acetone of respectively 23 Tg(CO2)/year, 13.6 Tg(CO)/year and 2.8 Tg(acetone)/year.
