Abstract: Ionic liquids are organic salts that are liquid below 100 degrees C and even at room temperature (Room Temperature Ionic Liquids, RTILs), with interesting properties that turn them into very attractive compounds for different applications. Due to their very low (almost negligible) volatility, this new family of chemical compounds significantly reduces its potential as atmospheric pollutant. However, a great number of ionic liquids have high solubility in water and their impact in the aquatic environment should be assessed, before their application.
