Abstract: Molecular rearrangements based on a Jahn-Teller mechanism are characterized by a specific permutational isomerism. This is illustrated for the metallacyclobutane rearrangement, proposed by Wilker and Hoffmann, and for the butterfly isomerisation of Fe(CO)4. It is shown that in both cases a full experimental conformation of the proposed Jahn-Teller mechanisms requires the resolution of enantiomeric reaction cycles.
