Synthesis and X-ray crystal structure analysis of the europium(III) beta-diketonate complexes Eu(BTA)(3)(H2O)(2) and Eu(BTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)

Two europium beta-diketonate complexes, diaquotris(benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetonato)europium(III), Eu(BTA)(3)(H2O)(2) and a mixed ligand complex of tris(benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetonato)europium(III) with triphenylphosphine oxide, Eu(BTA)(3)(TPPO)(2) were synthesized. The crystal structures of the two complexes was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Eu-coordination environment is in both structures very similar and is best described as a distorted dodecahedron of approximately <(4)over bar 2m> (D-2d) symmetry, with eight oxygen atoms (two from each of the three P-diketone ligands and two from either the water molecules or the phosphine oxide ligand molecules) located at the apices.
