In this paper, the effect of thickening the ground in an aperture coupled circularly polarized microstrip patch antenna is investigated. It is clearly shown that a ground thickness as small as 0.01λ has a considerable effect not only on return loss, but especially on circular polarization. A new simple technique is proposed to compensate for both. It involves modifying the slot width, but at the expense of a reduced bandwidth.
