Abstract: The purpose of this article is to discuss the use of be to as an auxiliary in verb forms that are interpreted as referring to the future, as in I am to clean my room. This is a corpus-based study in which conclusions are drawn from an analysis of about two thousand authentic examples, most of which come from the Cobuild corpus (University of Birmingham).
