Abstract:

This contribution deals with a neglected fragment from Metrodorus of Lampsacus (fr. 60 KOERTE), in which the bad conduct of two animals e contrario illustrates an important aspect of the Epicurean view of correct social behaviour. It is argued that Metrodorus refers in this fragment to one of Aesopus' Fables (267 Hausrath-Hunger = 188 Chambry), which he subtly reinterprets and adapts to his own Epicurean perspective. The passage thus shows that the Epicurean practice of a creative interpre-tatio medicans of previous literature can be traced back to the first generations of the Garden.
