Abstract: This paper describes the design of a system that is capable of detecting when a dementing elderly person is trying to leave the rest house. The dementing elderly are each wearing a passive RFID tag. These tags each have a unique code (UID) and are placed in the sole of the shoe. At each door, powerful thin-profile RFID antennas are placed on the floor like a doormat. The RFID-reader sends the code to a central microcontroller through a wireless link (Bluetooth). This central module connects to a PC where the software links the UID to a specific person. This PC can communicate with DECT systems, which are common in health-care institutions, so supervisors can be warned by a text message telling who tries to walk out, at what location. This approach makes the system unique, very reliable and easily installable in any existing building at a low cost i.e. without construction interferences. This system means a large improvement compared to existing stray-detection systems.
