Abstract:

The city of Antwerp has initiated a long-term study (2008–2012) in the Plantin-Moretus Museum to assess the pollutants and conditions of conservation in the museum. As the building is a historic monument, not originally built as museum, it is not straightforward to maintain good vironmental conditions. Most of the books are on open shelves in the library and many books and documents are on display in 19th-century showcases. The main task of the research is to characterize the most threatening air pollutants, microclimatic and lighting conditions and to determine whether the showcases are sufficiently protective for the object on display. The results obtained will be used to improve the preservation conditions of the unique collection in the museum. La ville d’Anvers a lancé une étude de longue durée (2008–2012) au musée Plantin-Moretus afin d’évaluer les polluants et les conditions de conservation dans le musée. Comme le bâtiment est un monument historique, qui n’était pas destiné à devenir un musée à l’origine, il n’est pas évident de maintenir de bonnes conditions environnementales. La plupart des livres se trouvent sur de simples étagères dans la bibliothèque, et de nombreux livres et documents sont exposés dans des vitrines du xixe siècle. L’objectif principal de la recherche est de caractériser les polluants de l’air les plus dangereux, d’examiner les conditions microclimatiques et d’éclairage et de déterminer si les vitrines protègent suffisamment les objets exposés. Les résultats obtenus permettront d’améliorer les conditions de préservation de la collection unique du musée.
