Abstract: The results of light scattering investigations on the conformational/associative properties of iota-carrageenan in aqueous solution are presented. The effect of different salts (NaCl, NaI, LiCl) has been investigated. The experimental data has been treated according to the Open Association Model by Elias. The results fit into the current model for the intermolecular association (i.e. the lateral junction of single-helical stretches) of the polysaccharide. The importance of preparative procedures in order to obtain reproducible light scattering data from aqueous solutions of (kappa- and iota-) carrageenan solutions is discussed.
