Abstract: In this review the electronic origins belonging to the (t(2g))(3) configuration in hexacoordinated Cr(III) complexes are described from the perspective of a shell-theoretic approach. The states of the shell are characterized by seven quantum numbers. Five of these relate to the electron spin, pseudo-angular momentum and spatial symmetry. In addition there are two quasi-spin quantum numbers, specifying the configurational symmetry of half-filled shell states. The review examines the spectroscopic impact of this rich quantum structure. Selection rules translate the internal symmetries of the shell into observable splitting patterns. Effects of interelectronic repulsion, spin-orbit coupling, ligand fields and external magnetic fields are discussed.
