Polarized absorption spectra of Eu3+ in single-crystal LiYF4 have been recorded at 298 K and 77 K in the region from 3900-39000 cm(-1). Symmetry assignments have been made in both D-2d and S-4. Calculated energy levels are obtained by diagonalizing a parametric Hamiltonian that describes tbe free-ion and crystal-field interactions in a basis of states spanning the 4f(6) electronic configuration of Eu3+. J mixing was taken into account.
