Alternative convergent synthesis strategies for the preparation of dendritic macromolecules, using either mesylate activation or the Mitsunobu reaction, are described. The synthesis can be further accelerated by using a double stage convergent approach. Two t-butyldiphenylsilyl protected synthons 3 and 5 were prepared in excellent yields and used in a one-pot synthesis of higher generation polyether dendrons.
