Before World War II, Constantin Piron, a Swiss banker and amateur pianist, discovered a large collection of 18th-c. MSS and prints of instrumental music in Semur-en-Auxois (near Dijon), where he was living at the time. Piron donated the whole collection to the Brussels Conservatoire Royale/Koninklijk Conservatorium in 1947. It never entered the library's main catalogue and therefore the collection remained virtually unknown. However, it contains some unica and previously lost pieces. The collection was owned by the family Varenne, lawyers in Semur-en-Auxois. As such it represents a valuable source for the study of musical life in the French provinces.
Collected work: Manuscrits de musique polyphonique originaires des anciens Pays-Bas; Manuscrits de musique polyphonique conservés en Belgique.
