Abstract: Interferon has been known for a long time but until recently, it was defined simply as a complex of proteins with antiviral activity that occurs when cultured cells are infected by virus. Significant progress has been made in the study of interferons. This article presents the properties of interferon and its mechanism of action, and the use of animal model systems to study interferon.
