Abstract: Many elements influence corrosion in ballast tanks on merchant vessels. Ballast tanks on more than 100 vessels were inspected and corrosion rates were evaluated following a standard procedure. Statistical interpretation of the data led to conclusions on the influence of elements such as ship length, sailing area, type of coating, type of vessel, and country of construction.
