Abstract: abbreviations in ancient documents may lead to erroneous readings. In Greek papyri the abbreviations for MH (for mên, month) and HM (for hêmera, day) are sometimes mixed up by the editors. In the second part of the article it is shown that words ending in -hêmeros are always feminine in ancient Greek and become masculine only in medieval times.
