Our society faces major challenges. The increase of patients with chronic, psychiatric disorders, both young and elderly people, urges for a renewed vision for the organization of psychiatric care.
Based on data from the literature, this paper will
indicate that general practitioners (GP)play an important role in mental health care. Epidemiological frameworks are explained which are fundamental in the duscussion on tasks and functions in the mental health care organization. Finally, based on the European definition of General Practice, the contribution of GPs in mental health care will be explained and illustrated with clinical examples of dementia, depression and psychosis.
