We report an endoscope used to perform in situ imaging based
on coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS). The imaging is performed with a scanning fiber endoscope (SFE) in combination with a miniature gradient index objective lens. The system produces images at 5 frames per second or better with high spatial resolution and chemical specificity without the use of labels. Details of the design and construction of the device, together with images of test objects and animal tissues are presented. The demonstration of CARS endoscopy is expected to open the door to a range of clinical applications that require
high resolution, label-free chemical imaging for diagnosis of disease and surgical guidance.
