Abstract: International development NGO's have changed their intervention strategies and policies multiple times over the past decades following both outsiders' criticisms and internal reflection processes. The top down approach consisting of imposing the "western" development model made way for a bottom up approach which focuses on identifying and supporting local initiatives through participatory methods.
Looking a bit closer to the concept of participation helps to unveil its rootedness in the Western cultural roots together with the unexpected ways in which the method is applied in African socio-cultural contexts.
