Non-professionals produce and share media content and become active participants of the media chain in a larger degree than ever before. There is therefore an increasing demand for tools supporting non-professionals in collaborative creation of user-generated content. This paper describes a tool supporting and stimulating nonprofessionals in collaborative storytelling that we have developed within the CITIZEN MEDIA project. Firstly, we conducted three studies to gather user requirements related to co-creation and sharing of user-generated content. Secondly, we followed a co-design approach with lead users to uncover the future needs of people telling stories in general, and collaborative storytelling in particular. Thirdly, we developed an online tool called Talhonia that in an intuitive way supports: i) real-time update of the story, ii) versioning, iii) permission management, iv) asynchronous and synchronous collaboration, and v) inspiration sharing. The tool is implemented in the context Adobe FLEX, MySQL and PHP. Talhonia is a first step towards support for synchronous co-creation of common media experiences.
