The characterization of unknown impurities present in tobramycin by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) is described. A reversed-phase (RP)-LC method using a volatile mobile phase containing a perfluorinated ion-pair reagent was developed and coupled with an ion trap mass-spectrometer. The structures of the unknown impurities were deduced by comparison of their fragmentation patterns with those of the available reference substances obtained by LC-MSn experiments.
