Abstract: Evidence concerning personality disorders is limited in the transplant literature, but the existence of a personality disorder in a transplant candidate does appear to be a risk factor for poor outcome after transplantation. This article addresses the issue of personality disorders in transplantation, including a definition and diagnostic criteria of personality disorders and the value of possible interventions to treat patients with personality disorders. Directions for treating personality disorders as part of the broader clinical management of transplant recipients are also provided.
