Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Several antibodies have been observed in the serum of patients suffering from these diseases. The antibodies are directed against multiple targets, including autoantigens and bacterial antigens. The present paper gives an overview of the antibodies found in patients with IBD and discusses the clinical (diagnostic, prognostic) and pathogenic significance of the antibodies.
