Abstract: Two ways to estimate crop stand density using LiDaR(Light Detection and Ranging)-sensors were evaluated. After coordinate transformation of the laser distance readings, either parameters related to laser penetration in the crop were extracted or clusters of measurement points were detected to determine the location of the ears.With the first method, crop density could be estimated with an R² of 0.8-0.96.The second method resulted in an R² of 0.65-0.93 but spot diameter was found to be critical for a reliable prediction. Machine vibrations and scan resolution did not influence the results for both methods.
