Abstract: Analyzed the responses of 116 Flemish 6th graders on a test containing 1-step multiplication and division problems to determine the influence of number types on choice of solution strategy. Findings support the hypothesis that Ss' difficulties in selecting an appropriate response strategy in multiplication word problems would be strongly affected by the multiplier used. This effect was found only in asymmetrical problems and was weaker when Ss were asked to solve a problem instead of being forced to choose between a fixed set of arithmetical operations.
