Advance care planning in Belgian homes for
the elderly: an exploration
In our ageing society doctors and healthcare workers
are faced with the dilemma whether the application
of technical medicine improves the lifequality
and meets the patients” wishes. Within the
healthcare system planning paths facilitating the
debate on these issues need to be implemented. In
the scientific literature this process is called Advance
Care Planning (ACP).
The aim of this paper was to describe ACP in
Belgian homes for the elderly. Apart from experiences
in the field and the legal framework, possible
endpoints of this process are analyzed as well as
the neccesities to introduce it.
