Abstract: In this article, I address Alexander of Aphrodisias' and Galen's theories of "matter" in both its technical sense (as opposed to form and functionning in correlation with it to constitue the corporeal compounds), and its more general and modern sense (as denoting the hylomoprhic compounds as such, that form what one calls the "material" world). This analysis is made in a comparative perspective, focusing on the similitudes that can be pointed to between Alexander's and Galen's account on this questions, and on the differences of their views and Aristotle's own account. Galen's and Alexander's ideas on that matter are also put in perspective with the Hellenistic systems, in particular Stoicism. Within this framework, I show how and why Alexander and Galen give to the processes of "alteration" and of "blending" a much more central role than Aristotle did in his natural philosophy.
