This article presents the contribution of G. Alberigo to the History of Vatican II. It pays attention to the hermeneutical rules as developed by Alberigo. It makes clear the inner relation between Alberigo's personal convictions as committed and engaged Christian and the project Vatican II. Attention is also paid to the fruitful interaction between the project and the renewed concern for the collecting of archival material related to the council. The article concludes with some critical remarks and appreciations of the work of one of the leading historians of the 20th century.
