Abstract: The design of split-plot experiments has received a considerable amount of attention during the last few years. In this paper, it is shown that crossed split-plot designs are optimal for a given set of treatments and that two-level factorial and fractional factorial designs are D-optimal for estimating first order response surface models. In addition, an algorithm is presented for computing D-optimal designs tailored to a specific experimental situation. The algorithm is evaluated and applied to a protein extraction experiment.
