Abstract: A novel type of piezoelectric motor has been developed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. This ‘Leuven motor’ can operate in several drive modes by virtue of an innovative symmetrical design. Case studies show that the Leuven motor can be used as a core component of a new generation of stiff, compact and non-magnetic positioning systems with a high positioning resolution, wide speed range and a large stroke, capable of operating in demanding environments, e.g. cryogenic and (ultra-high) vacuum.
