Abstract: We review the results of a double label 2-deoxyglucose study in the awake monkey demonstrating that attention can suppress activity at early levels in the primate visual system, in regions surrounding the representation of the attended stimulus. These findings are in agreement with human imaging results and were modeled in a dynamic simulation, highlighting the role of the reticular thalamic nucleus in these suppressive effects.
