Abstract: The PODOI research project titled "Towards a social pact for sustainable development" has focussed on the study of paricipatory processes in the Belgian policy making context. In the process we have first conceptualised sustainable development as a policy concept and have analysed how it is operationalised in actual policy making on different terrains. That part of the research has been reported in several contributions to the DWTC paper series and elsewhere. In this contribution, we wish to draw a number of conclusions on the participatory context of sustainable development, based on the observations we have made during the last 5 years of research. In that sense it is not a theoretical reporting, but rather a policy oriented set of "reality checks" that build on field research.
