Abstract: Word frequency data have gained ground in EFL methodology for the selection of target vocabulary. Have the tools that resulted from this research become efficient and effective to the individual EFL learner in autonomous language learning situations?
In this article we will introduce a freeware, the WordClassifier and show the usefulness of this automated tool in various applications in language practice, course and test design, not only to teachers and teacher trainees but also to individual learners, in this case students of business English. We will also expand on the range of words the database of the WordClassifier can cover and on how this tool may well fit as the step up to the more advanced use of concordancers and similar elaborate tools of vocabulary management.
