Abstract: Welcome to the proceedings of the third International Workshop on Middleware for Sensor Networks. This workshop builds on the success of MidSens 2007 in Newport Beach and MidSens 2006 in Melbourne and will continue working towards the definition of appropriate middleware architectures and programming models for sensor networks.

As sensor network standards such as 802.15.4 gain acceptance and commercial sensor network platforms emerge, sensor network technologies are being used in an increasing variety of application domains, from environmental monitoring to industrial process control. This growth in the acceptance and use of sensor networks is driving the development of standardised sensor network middleware, particularly to support the efficient management of large sensor networks.

The MidSens 2008 proceedings present high quality submissions from five different countries. We believe that the mix of accepted papers provides a good snapshot of current research in the field as well as a jumping-off point for discussion of outstanding challenges in middleware for sensor networks.
