Abstract: In order to simulate the process of Al-killing and Ti-alloying in RH degassing treatment, a pilot scale test of deoxidation of liquid steel by Al and Ti was carried out under an Ar atmosphere at secondary steelmaking temperature (1600-1650°C) in an induction furnace equipped with an oxygen measurement probe and steel sampler. The behavior of steel deoxidation by Al and Ti additions and that of titanium oxide reduction from Al-Ti-O inclusions by secondary Al-killing were discussed. Specific attention is given to inclusion size and the compositional correlation between the inclusions and the steel. An Al content of approximately 120 ppm prior to Ti addition is necessary to prevent Ti loss during the alloying process of Fe to 500 ppm Ti.
