Abstract: The eddy-current losses in a superconductive dipole
magnet comprising a metallic beam tube are calculated. A
standard 3D Finite Element (FE) formulation is accomplished
by a shell element representation of the thin beam tube. Thanks
to the resulting reduced model size and the improved aspect
ratio of the tetrahedra used for discretization, the computational
time, in particular for transient nonlinear simulations, is reduced
significantly.
