Abstract: It is our contention that the “problem” of Palladio’s so-called success in the Northern part of the former Burgundian federation (the Seven Provinces, ruled by the house of Orange as stadholders of the Republic) and his lack thereof in the Southern part (the remaining Ten, under Spanish Habsburg rule) stems from the nineteenth and twentieth-century reading of the evidence. The wide-spread success of Palladio’s models throughout the world in the late eighteenth century (and this does include at the time the Southern Netherlands, albeit mediated by French and English Palladianist examples) has profoundly coloured scholarly thought on his “afterlife”.
